Today – January 23 marks the first day of the Chinese New Year and 2012 is The year of the dragon. Chinese people will travel at their family homes to celebrate the New Year holiday.
China will celebrate the whole week with characteristic dragon dances and extravagant parades and the chinese people still consider the dragon to be a lucky sign, this being an old tradition from the ancient Chines cultures.
Chinese year based-horoscopes begins with the Rat, next is the Ox, Tiger, Rabit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and ends with the Pig. The system is cyclical and the New Year’s day appears on the second moon after the winter solstice.
The year of the Dragon is told to bring happiness, hopes and success, the Dragon sign being the most recongnized sign in the Chinese calendar. For the next days, Chinese people will celebrate the beginning of this desirable year with holiday traditions that include making peace with the people you fought in the past, hosting feasts or giving children money.
Even the search engines in China made a competition between them to welcome the Dragon Year. Baidu has created a logo on its homepage and Sogou.com has created a great animated video. Even Microsoft’s Bing China features among the backgroung images, a dragon image.
Many celebrities were born in previous dragon years: singer-songwriter John Lennon, martial arts master Bruce Lee, actor Keanu Reeves, actor Colin Farrel, actress Calista Flockart, actor Liam Nesson, artist Salvador Dali and many more.
Due of the believes that the dragon sign brings happiness and success in life, China is expeting an increasing in the number of births this year. We will see at the end of the year how many “dragon babies will bring this year.
